‘To understand something, you have to deconstruct it’
Born in Zurich in 1958, Rafael Springer is a multidisciplinary artist. Painter, sculptor and writer, he is dedicated to his artistic creation since 1982. His work is a form of meditation, a kind of patient and methodical exploration of the possibilities until nothing is left.
A subject is never isolated. It is always part of an exploration, even maybe of a journey starting in his studio. A place from where the artist undertakes a methodical investigation of the tree of possibilities: bough after bough, leaf after leaf.
Amongst his recent works, we can find a series of “subjective mapping” as well as several series of collages created with elements found in photography books, magazines, adverts as well as using catalogues of other artists. He deconstructs and reconstructs images. He transforms and transcends them. The works proposed for Artfriendly are very recent and have to be placed in the continuity of his series of collages. These works combine both collage and xylography.
The work of the artist has been presented to the public at many different exhibitions as for instance Le vide dans le cercle de la corde à sauter, Galerie Indépendance in Luxembourg in 2009 or Qu’est-ce qu’elle a ma gueule? Galerie Alimentation Générale Luxembourg in 2003. Amongst the books he has published we can find: Alarm. Briefe an mich or The Sausage. The End. The World.
